Page-26 : The sustenance(الرزق) of the Jinns: Satans in different shapes and colours: Ghouls (غول)and Sa'li:( و السعالى)
The sustenance(الرزق) of the Jinns:
Ibn Jarir narrated on the authority of Wahb Ibn Munabbih
that he was asked about the jinn. Do they eat, drink, die, or get married? He
said, “They are races. Especial Jinn among them are airy(In shape), (Wind like creatures)they
do not eat and drink, and among them are races who eat, drink, get married, and die and it is that in which the ghouls, female demons, and
others like that are included.” (Ref.1)
Satans in different shapes and colours:
Ghouls and Sa'li:
On the authority of Ash-Shaybani, on the authority of
Bashir Ibn Amr, who said that Al-Gailan (الغيلان ) was mentioned to Umar. He said:
There is nothing that transforms from the creation on which he was created, but
they have magicians like your magicians. If you feel any of that, then give the call to prayer. (It
means- announce Azan) (Ref.2)
Hafiz Nuruddin Ali Ibn Abi Bakr Al-Haithami reported a
Hadith in his book-
Muhammad Ibn Al-Layth Al-Hadadi
told us, Abu Ghassan told us, Abdus -Salam told us, on the authority of Yunus,
on the authority of Al-Hasan, on the authority of Saad, he said: “Allah’s Rasul
(Sm.) commanded us that, if the ghouls invaded us, or if we saw the ghouls, we
would announce Azan.” Al-Bazzar said: “ We do not know that this Hadith is narrated from Sa`d except this way,
and we do not know that Al-Hasan heard anything from Saa`d .”Habibur Rahan Al-Azami
said in the footnote of his book
“Ghoul is a kind of Jinn and Satans, who are seen in an uninhabited
region. They reveal in colors in different
shapes.”(Ref.3)
Ibn Manzur said:
He also said: هى جمع سعلاة قيل هم سحرة الجن
And (It is described ) in the Hadith: Allah’s
Rasul (Sm.) said: There is no “Safar,” nor Hamah, nor a ghoul, But there are
Sa’li, which is the plural of Sa’lah. It is said, they are the magicians of
Jinn. It means –indeed the Ghoul doesn’t have the power to deceive anyone and
mislead him, but among the Jinn, there are magicians like human magicians. They
have the power to confuse and create an illusion (To human beings). The Arabs
mentioned it in their poetry. Al-A’shi said (In his poem), “And women are as like as As-Sa’ali.”
(Ref.4)
Badruddin Al-Aini said :
“Allah’s Rasul’s (Sm.)Saying
– “Wa- La-Safara” The Arabs used to think that there is a snake in the stomach
called As-Safar, that infects a human being when he is hungry and harms him and
that it is contagious., So, Islam
abolished that. (This disease is called As-Safar).”
He also said:
“Al-Hamah is the name of a bird, and that is
meant in the Hadith, and that is because they(Arabian people) used to consider
it ominous, and it is the bird of night. It is said, that Arabs used to think, that
the soul of the killed person, who didn’t get his revenge, becomes Hamah, then
he says: make me drink, make me drink. When he gets his revenge, he flies away.
Then Islam denied it and forbade them from that.”(Ref.5)
At the end of
Hadith reported by Abu Huraira(R.) -
Then I (Abu Hurairah) said, “What is the
condition of dung and bone?” He (Sm) said, “They both are the food of the jinn.
The delegate of jinn of
(the city of) Nasibin came to me - and how nice those Jinns were! They asked me
for food. I prayed (Supplicated) to Allah for them, that they never pass by a
bone or dung but find food on them." ( Sahih Bukhari,
Kitabu Manaqibil Ansar, Hadith no-3860).
